Sam Rankin B.Sc.(Hons.), MCP, MBCS, MIoD
Sam
graduated from Exeter University in 1999 with a BSc in Computer
Science. The degree provided a valuable grounding in many
fundamental areas of hardware and software theory. For his
final year project he developed and successfully deployed
a patient management system for a department in the Royal
Devon and Exeter Hospital. Experience gained from developing
this system enabled Sam to gain a software engineering position
with Harlyn Systems in Exeter.
Sam spent his first six months at Harlyn Systems on the
support and maintenance team responsible for the suite of
applications running within all ntl: call centers. Sam's
responsibilities included analysis and design as well as
implementation using Visual Basic, Access, Oracle and AS400.
After promotion Sam joined a new team within Harlyn Systems
responsible for developing a new product, Field Force, currently
installed at multiple customer sites across the U.K. Sam
was involved in both the design and implementation of early
demonstration versions right through to live production
versions. UML was used during the design process and a combination
of Visual Basic, SQL Server and COM+ were used for implementation.
Sam quickly became a valuable asset to the team, demonstrating
a flare for systems technology in addition to his development
skills, which gained him another promotion. Sam then passed
a BCS accredited examination in Object Orientated Design
and achieved Microsoft Certified Professional status after
passing two Visual Basic exams. Sam was also elected an
associate member of the British Computer Society.
Sam is now Technical Director for iridium and, working
closely with Tim, aims to ensure that the most suitable
technologies are exploited for both customer and internal
projects and services.
Outside work, Sam enjoys playing tennis, squash, badminton
and golf. He is also a keen runner and has participated
in many events, including the Bristol Half Marathon, The
Great West Run and the London Marathon.
